Caga Tio

If you thought Christmas traditions couldn't get any quirkier, let us introduce you to the beloved Catalan character, Caga Tió ("Shit Uncle")—or as some affectionately call him, the “Pooping Log.” Yes, you read that right! Caga Tió, a festive little wooden log with a painted face and red hat, has an unusual yet delightful role in Catalan homes each December. Children feed him, tuck him in with a blanket, and eagerly wait for him to “poop” out presents and sweets on Christmas Eve.

As an American-Italian family living in Catalonia, we love incorporating traditions from our home countries. But for my young son, nothing is more satisfying than celebrating with Caga Tió. It all begins on December 8th, the Day of the Immaculate Conception, when we head out to the woods to find our own Caga Tió. From that day on, my son feeds him orange rinds and nut shells each night, getting him ready for the big event on Christmas Eve.

When Christmas Eve finally arrives, my son grabs a giant stick, and with a big grin, begins the ritual. Together, we sing the traditional Caga Tió song at the top of our lungs:

Caga tió,caga torró,avellanes i mató,si no cagues béet daré un cop de bastó.caga tió!

Or in English:

"Shit, log,shit nougats,hazelnuts and mató cheese,if you don't shit well,I'll hit you with a stick,shit, log!"

After a few minutes of “privacy,” Caga Tió magically “delivers”—candy and small gifts appear under his blanket as a reward for all the weeks of care and feeding. There’s nothing quite like the joy in my son’s eyes when he lifts that blanket to find the treats. It’s a little odd, and a whole lot of fun—a truly memorable Catalan twist on Christmas.
